Technical & Personal Skills

Scientific Inquiry, key scientific skills, problem solving, communication, collaboration

Create session

This program has been specifically designed to use a simple investigation, centred on the familiar concept of juicing oranges, to allow students the chance to focus explicitly on their scientific inquiry skills and delve into what makes a good experiment.

Throughout the workshop, students have the opportunity to reflect on the activity and determine what could be altered to make this experiment more effective and why, helping to prepare them to enter the Peter Doherty Science Award.

The investigation lends itself well to all levels of scientific understanding and is easily adaptable to students right at the beginning of their science education, all the way up to the added challenges found in the VCE Sciences, particularly investigations associated with Outcome 3.

Students will

  • Engage in an experiment to further their scientific inquiry skills
  • Reflect on how ‘good’ experiments are conducted
  • Discuss the activities limitations and ways to improve it
  • Apply scientific skills to real world scenarios
