Students deepen their understanding of the scientific method by working through a deceptively fruitful investigation to answer the question on everyone’s mind, which is the juicier orange!
This program has been specifically designed to use a simple investigation centred on juicing oranges, to allow students the chance to focus explicitly on their scientific inquiry skills. Through this easy to understand and familiar concept of ‘juicing fruits’, students are able to delve into what makes a good experiment. Throughout the workshop, students have the opportunity to reflect on the activity and determine what could be altered to make this experiment more effective and why.
The investigation lends itself well to all levels of scientific understanding and is easily adaptable to students right at the beginning of their science education, all the way up to the added challenges found in the VCE Sciences, particularly investigation associated with Outcome 3.
The program requires a minimum of 60 minutes to be completed, however if more time can be dedicated to the session this will add even further to your students learning and skill acquisition. This offering is available to be completed onsite at the Tech School, however is also well suited to being booked as an incursion, being completed in a lab space.
The name of this program stems from the Tech School's annual Peter Doherty Science Awards (PDSA) event which encourages students to utilise the scientific method to answer a question of their choosing. For more information on the PDSA click here.
